DAVID D. SCHEIN

MEDIATOR & ARBITRATOR

During his career, Mr. Schein has been involved with all areas of Alternative Dispute Resolution. He has successfully completed mediations and arbitrations in Virginia, Texas and Washington, DC for trial level and appellate courts and federal district court. His expert analysis and counsel in employment and business law matters is based on over 30 years of practical experience, including a decade with Fortune 500 companies followed by over fifteen years of professional ADR practice.

Mr. Schein provides ADR services through Commonwealth Mediation Group in Richmond, Virginia, and through the Heights Mediation Center in Houston, Texas. Commonwealth provides mediation and arbitration services through its modern offices located in Richmond and Chesterfield County.

Located near downtown Houston, The Heights Mediation Center, in the Heights Historic District, provides an unique backdrop for mediations and hearings. This beautiful, two-story house, is listed in the National Register. It has been thoroughly renovated and features a gallery porch and two balconies, but also has the latest conveniences for the comfort of all visitors.

Mr. Schein conducts mediations and arbitrations at other locations by agreement of the parties.

His ADR practice emphasizes employment-related and business-to-business disputes. Mr. Schein has received advanced training in the mediation and arbitration of employment related disputes. He has completed a special American Bar Association training program for mediation of disputes for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. He has completed the US Postal Service Advanced Mediation Training for the REDRESS Program and the World Bank Employment Mediation Training.

Mr. Schein is a Certified Mediator in General and Family by the Supreme Court of Virginia, as well as a Certified Mediation Mentor. He has provided mediation training through Mediate-Tech for the Veteran’s Administration, Federal Executive Board, Health Care Financing Administration, the Office of Personnel Management Executive Training Center. He has also been a trainer for mediation certification courses at various training centers. Mr. Schein has served as a member of the Council of the Houston Bar Association ADR Section.

Mr. Schein has served on many public mediation panels, including: the United States District Court, Southern District of Texas; National Archives and Records Administration, FINRA; Harris County Dispute Resolution Center; US Postal Service REDRESS program; Equal Employment Opportunity Commission; and the World Bank. He has served as an arbitrator for the Better Business Bureau Auto Line Program in Washington, DC. He has judged competitions in mediation and other ADR topics for the South Texas College of Law and the University of Houston Law Center.

Mr. Schein is well known throughout the business community due to numerous seminars and lectures throughout the United States. He has been featured in seminar appearances from New York and Florida to Texas and California. Mr. Schein is an adjunct faculty member for courses in business ethics, human resource management and labor and employment law. He has taught courses for the University of Virginia, University of Maryland, University of Richmond, Central Michigan University, Rice University Graduate School of Business and other prestigious organizations.

His published articles include: “Independent Contractors”, July 1995, “Sexual Harassment in the Fitness Industry”, Spring 1995, “Family & Medical Leave Act”, January 1994, and “Impact of The Civil Rights Act of 1991 on Health/Fitness Facilities”, September 1992, which were published in The Exercise Standards and Malpractice Reporter; “Americans with Disability Act”, Leaps Newsletter, October 1990; “Facing the Drug-Test Challenge”, Sam’s Buy-Line, Spring 1989; “Should Employers Restrict Smoking in the Workplace”, Labor Law Journal, March 1987; and “How to Prepare a Company Policy on Substance Abuse Control”, Personnel Journal, July 1986. He also has two articles in the Encyclopedia of Security Management, published by Butterworth, 1993. Mr. Schein is a member of many civic, alumni and social organizations. He is a Life Member of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. He has served as a Director of the Houston Asian Chamber of Commerce, Health Access Texas and the Houston Wellness Council.
