Can a doctor be sent to federal prison for exposing a hospital’s secrets? For surgeon Dr. Eithan Haim, that threat was very real – facing 10 years behind bars and a quarter-million-dollar fine for allegedly violating HIPAA. But in a stunning move that some say signals a “new sheriff in town,” the U.S. Justice Department has dismissed all charges against him with prejudice. Today, we’re looking at the nation’s largest pediatric hospital, the thin line between whistleblowing and patient privacy, and why this dismissal means the case can never be revived.
